Mount Tanigawa

Mount Tanigawa (谷川岳 Tanigawa-dake) is a 1,977m mountain on the border of Gunma Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture in Japan. It is one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan. As of December 2014, since its initial exploration and route-finding in the early 1930s, a total of 805 people have died on Tanigawa-dake. The mountain lies on the border of Gunma and Niigata Prefectures and sits precisely where the weather systems from the Asian continent and the Pacific meet in often furious displays of extreme weather. Cornices on the ridge can reach out over 20 metres and occur at lower levels of the mountain as well as along the summit ridge. Avalanche risk is severe almost all of the time snow is present, with large wet-slab avalanches being very predominant.

Arakawa River Cruises

River boating is serious business in Nagatoro. After a 5 minute walk through Iwadatami Dori, Nagatoro's main shopping street, you arrive at the foot of the Iwadatami rock formation. There is another booth selling tickets for the river cruises.
The river cruises are done by tour boats carrying about 20 passengers and steered by two men with long poles. They travel along high rock walls and through some excitingly rough waters.
At the end of the trip down river, the passengers are brought back to central Nagatoro by bus. The boats are lifted from the river by crane and transported back to their starting point by truck. Those boats are built to go down river, they can't make the trip back on their own.

Fukiware Falls

Gradual erosion of the rocks for more than 10,000 years has led to the creation of these spectacular falls. The 7m high and 30m wide waterfall merges to form a V-shape. As you walk the paths beside the water streams leading to these falls, you will feel as though it is all going down into a large drain. Make your way to the suspension bridge to get the best aspect of the area.

Shiraito Waterfall

Shiraito Waterfall (白糸の滝, Shiraito no Taki), measuring three meters high and 70 meters wide, is located in the forests north of downtown Karuizawa. The mountain slopes above the waterfall contain a volcanic stratum on which groundwater flows before surfacing here. This explains why no river flows into the Shiraito Waterfall. Also, as only a small portion of the water flowing is rain water, the strength of the flow stays relatively constant independant of the weather. Shiraito no Taki literally means "the waterfall of white threads", which aptly describes its appearance, as multiple streaks of water drape over the surface forming what seems like a white curtain. The site is most beautiful in summer when the vegetation is lush; it is a somewhat popular destination for autumn colors around late October each year. Immediately below the Shiraito Waterfall is a secondary waterfall that is shaped such that water cascades over several steps.

Kusatsu Onsen Street

One pleasure of visiting Kusatsu is ambling slowly around its narrow streets of traditional buildings, and a good place to do this is 'Onsen Street', running roughly from the town's focus of Yubatake ('Hot water field') to the stately Kusatsu Hotel. There are clothing stores and souvenir shops, stores dedicated to teddy-bears, tableware and exquisite glassware, and vendors selling cakes, boiled eggs and other snacks for you to nibble on as you stroll around.

Kusatsu Onsen

Kusatsu Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, northwest of Tokyo. It is a popular tourist destination. There are 13 public baths at Kusatsu Onsen. The small bathhouses that are free for both town residents and tourists are managed by the townspeople themselves. The source of its hot water is nearby Mount Kusatsu-Shirane and the appearance of the waters range from cloudy to clear, because the sources of the water that the baths rely upon are different. The springs were a well known resort for centuries but they became one of the best known of such locations after the water there was recommended for its health benefits by Erwin von Baelz a German doctor who taught medicine at Tokyo University. The locals claim the hot springs can cure all forms of ailments except love sickness. Guests have claimed that pain disappears while soaking in its hot water.

St.Paul's Catholic Church Karuizawa

St. Paul Catholic Church was established in 1935 by French people living in Karuizawa, along with the efforts and donations of other Catholic believers. Amongst them, Czech American architect, Antonin Raymond, and his artisan wife French-American Noemi (both devout followers), worked together for the construction of the building and its ornamentation.

Kyu-Karuizawa

Karuizawa is located in eastern Nagano Prefecture, bordered by Gunma Prefecture to the north, east and south. The town is located on an elevated plain at the foot of Mount Asama, one of Japan's most active volcanoes. The mountain is classed as a Category A active volcano. A small eruption was detected in June 2015, a more significant eruption spewing hot rocks and a plume of ash occurred in February 2015. Mt. Asama's most destructive eruption in recent recorded history took place in 1783, when over 1,000 were killed. The volcano is actively monitored by scientists and climbing close to the summit is prohibited.
